Here on the Gulf Coast, we may not be preparing for a “White Christmas,” but we can still have a “Coastal Christmas.” So huge, pine garland and sleigh rides may not match your sleeveless style, but you can give a touch of Christmas festivity while matching the beach scene. Even though classic crimsons and evergreens are traditional in Christmas decorations, consider matching more of your home’s color scheme rather than the mainstream holiday décor.
On the coast, people usually match the indoors to the outdoors by decorating with light, airy pastels or playful colors like salmon, turquoise, sunshine yellow, and spring greens. So, the traditional Christmas color scheme usually clashes with the year-round home décor. But you can still translate Christmas on the coast with a few decorating twists.
For light, airy pastel decorating, use white starfish garlands, driftwood, and clear twinkle lights. Add snow-capped garland to keep the evergreen light and bright, or use an artificial white Christmas tree. Accent the tree in ornaments that match the colors of your home. If you’re in the mood to get crafty, head to your nearby seafood market or any restaurant that discards oyster shells. Collect several shells, rinse, dry, and hot-glue a stiff twine to create a loop to hang as ornaments. You can also do this with dried sand dollars. By bringing in nature’s own treasures to decorate your home, you can keep your Christmas coastal!
For decorating with playful colors, you can have fun with your floral arrangements. An unexpected but festive color combination is mixing orange roses with deep pink or fuchsia roses. You can accent with deep greenery and add a creative touch with cranberries. Arrange your roses and greenery in a clear vase with water. Then add a one-inch layer of cranberries to float on top of the water which adds a festive dimension to your vase. Friends and family will love to see hints of tradition in a fresh, new way with your decorating!
Lastly, with any home décor, lighting is key. A resourceful way to decorate with lights is purchasing twinkle lights on copper wire that are battery operated. Add to wreaths, garland, dining table settings, or stuff in a glass bottle for a homemade lamp! The copper wire allows you to bend and position the lights for your decorating needs.
With seaside elements, a light, and bright color scheme, and twinkle lights, you can weave the beauty of your home with the joy of the season. So, make the traditions work for you and your home in a modern way! Wishing you and yours a very, merry “Coastal Christmas!”
